Graduate Engineer at Babcock Australasia
Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honors) at Auckland University of Technology
What's your job about?
Babcock provides ship repair, marine engineering, and fleet sustainment services, primarily for the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). As part of the graduate program, we rotate for six months, depending on the required capabilities provided by the Early Careers Team. In the last year, I have worked in the Design team managing engineering change proposals, creating design solutions, and being involved in design reviews. Currently, I am in the Asset Management team writing Asset Management Plans for the Maritime Fleet Sustainment Services (MFSS) Contract and managing Asset Risk initial investigations.
What's your background?
I grew up in Whangaparao, surrounded by beaches! I went to Orewa College, where I was exposed to Engineering workshop classes, the Robotics club and the Gateway program, where I had hands-on work experience, all of which helped solidify my drive to become an Engineer. I went to Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and absolutely loved it there, I worked as a CNC Machinist whilst studying, which helped me develop my understanding of machining, tolerances, design limitations, continuous improvements, and business strategies. I applied for Babcock after a careers day event at university and liked what they had to say about the business culture, the interview was interactive and gave a good insight into what to expect moving forward. I have been at Babcock for a year and have already learnt so much about the business and developed my skills in a lot of areas.

Characteristics needed to be a graduate engineer are Curiosity, a problem-solving mindset, adaptability, good collaboration, and attention to detail. Great skills to have are technical proficiency, which can be developed in your placement, Analytical thinking, communication, project and time management and continuous learning.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
The opportunity to work on projects that directly support the Royal New Zealand Navy, from maintaining advanced vessels to solving real-world engineering problems. Being part of a team that ensures the functionality and readiness of critical maritime assets is incredibly rewarding, and the hands-on experience of being able to board vessels makes every day more exciting and unique as you could be on board taking measurements or confirming documentation instead of sitting at your desk. Flexible working hours within reason and the ability to work from home is a benefit! There is potential for good career growth within the company and opportunities to try new things.
What are the limitations of your job?
As a graduate of Babcock’s program, one of the key challenges is navigating the complex frameworks of processes and procedures, which can take time to fully understand. Additionally, there is a continuous need for learning and development to keep pace with advancements in technology and industry practices. The program puts a significant amount of responsibility on graduates as we contribute to critical projects that directly impact the company’s operations and clients. This requires a proactive approach, attention to detail, and accountability for ensuring quality.
