Fulton Hogan is looking for Graduate Civil Engineers to join its Utilities team as part of its 2022 Graduate Program. This presents an exciting opportunity for a student in their final year or a recent graduate to work in the fast-paced construction industry on utilities infrastructure projects that span across the water, power, gas and telecommunications sectors.

At Fulton Hogan, it is less about designing the concept and more about how to we bring that concept to life. Our Engineers work on site solving real problems every day. It is the Engineer's job to work as part of a team and plan the construction works, taking into consideration commercial, financial, environmental, safety and quality aspects of the task. They develop ideas, methodologies and bring everything together to ensure our works are delivered successfully.

That's what makes this role so rewarding – for all your hard work and dedication, you will gain exposure to our long-term delivery programmes and frameworks where you will develop an understanding of the utilities infrastructure that we rely on daily, and how we can renew, upgrade and/or replace these ageing assets to deliver increased reliability and contribute to building better, more liveable communities.

What we need from you:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering.
  • Good leadership, organisational and communication skills with the ability to develop, manage and maintain great relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • A high degree of enthusiasm and drive, with a strong desire to deliver positive outcomes as part of a team.
  • A practical mindset, with a hands-on approach to getting things done.
  • Flexibility to undertake regular travel to our project sites, in addition to occasional weekend work or night-shift.

Our Graduate Program includes:

  • A tailored career development framework (CDF) which provides you with a structured career pathway from a graduate through to a Project Manager. The CDF empowers and enables you to develop the knowledge, skills and experience required for a long-term career with us.
  • Genuine hands-on experience acquired through your exposure to different projects within your chosen business stream.
  • Social learning and networking opportunities through our National Graduate induction, mentoring program and Graduate Community Group.
  • Engage in personal and professional growth through Fulton Hogan's formal learning activities such as virtual classrooms, group project and a personalised development plan.

I feel like the work I am doing in the environment team is making a real difference. I love the opportunities I get to help train and develop others. Raising awareness about the environment in our work is greatly rewarding. I also love being able to assist on sustainability projects and improve operations on-site. I feel as though I am contributing to the sustainability of our company and reducing the impact we have on the planet and the community.

Day-to-day responsibilities vary and can sometimes leave a lot of spare time in the day. Often complete the same tasks when they come up.

Pros and cons of working at Fulton Hogan

Pros

  • I think the best thing about the company is the open working culture within colleagues. I was a bit scared as I am a chemical engineer but I was about to work in a construction/civil company. But, as soon as I started, I felt welcomed and at ease. The team I started with was just amazing and helped me settle in perfectly. Couldn't have asked for a better start.

  • Extremely supportive and friendly seniors that encourages, guides and mentors graduate to excel in their roles and provides opportunities to gain exposure/ experience in the industry.

  • The opportunities to learn, being given the time and space to travel between sites, to train and learn new things or refresh old skills. Having a team of incredible people that I can turn to for support and ask questions!

  • The atmosphere is super friendly that fosters growth and collaboration. The abundance of amazing learning opportunities to equip me with valuable skills and knowledge, complemented by a well-structured graduate program.

  • I think the best thing is the opportunity to work alongside a wide range of people and disciplines, opening your eyes to so many different skill sets. This gives you the opportunity to constantly learn, particularly as I am not from a construction or engineering background. Everybody in my direct and wider team is open to assisting me as well as having a laugh while still delivering great outcomes for the community. I really enjoy the top-down positive and cohesive environment that the team here provides, in more ways than one. I really enjoy working here!

Cons

    • You have to be quite adaptable, given the organisation's requirements are constantly changing you have to switch up what you are doing quite frequently.

    • Work Life Balance.

    • Long Working Hours, and Very Remote Place.

    • Long commute time to different projects.

    • Sometimes I work long hours (I like my job and the work, so I'm okay with it, but others may not be).
