Engineering Intern at Norwegian Geotechnical Institute
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Curtin University
6.00 AM
Today I woke up and headed straight down to the beach for a swim, before going home and getting ready for work.
8.00 AM
I usually leave home around 8am, and drive to the train station to get the train into the city (gotta make the most of the free school holiday public transport!).
9.00 AM
I get to work and get straight into working on pile design. This particular project is for the foundation of a mooring system for a floating storage regasification unit located offshore Indonesia. I am currently calculating the axial capacity of the piles, which is a key factor in determining the final design of the piles.
10.00 AM
Morning tea time! The office provides a weekly sweet treat to help get us through the week, today we had some yummy Norwegian waffles.
10.15 AM
To finish up my morning I get back into some pile design. We are aiming to reduce the length of these piles, so I work on determining the minimum penetration depth that can sustain the maximum design load.
12.00 PM
On Thursdays we have our weekly office meeting to catch up on what everyone is working on, and any other exciting news. Today we went through the status of proposals, the newly appointed “Clay Cockatoo” social committee and were treated to a much-awaited travel report.
12.30 PM
After the office meeting, I like to head straight off to lunch. We are lucky to be located opposite the Stirling Gardens, which is where I usually take my lunch to get outside for a bit.
1.00 PM
After lunch I decide to put the pile design to rest and focus on a different project. For this project we are doing a geotechnical interpretation of the ground beneath offshore oil rigs which are being decommissioned. I head to the comfy couches in our collab room for a change of scenery.
3.00 PM
Time to fight off the afternoon slump with a quick coffee break! The office has a coffee club, and we head out for a weekly coffee together to catch up.
3.15 PM
Recharged and refreshed, I get back into some geotechnical interpretation.
4.00 PM
We are moving into a new office in the next few weeks, and I was lucky to get a tour with our managing director. It is in the final stages of fit-out, and it was very exciting to see how it has all come together.
4.30 PM
Back from the tour, I finish off a few bits and pieces. I am heading off to our lab tomorrow, so I made sure to hand over any work and got myself ready for some lab testing!
