As an Education Assistant – Mainstream you will assist in the delivery of planned education programs that will help in the development of young minds. In this role you will collaborate and work in a team environment, and ideally possess good written and oral communication skills to enable the implementation of individual or small group programs, as well as the ability to support general health and well-being of students. Suitable applicants will ideally be organised and be able to use their initiative to assist with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment.

Suitable applicants will work under teacher direction in a diverse role. They will provide assessment feedback and show initiative to provide learning opportunities that develop or complement a student’s Individual Education Program. As an Education Assistant – Mainstream you would also provide support to ensure the learning environment is inclusive and relevant with the health and safety of students being a high priority.

Meekatharra DHS is located approximately 800 kilometres north east of Perth. The school draws from a diverse population of around 1,000 locally and 2,100 district-wide, representing Aboriginal communities, pastoral, mining and related service industries. The town of Meekatharra is renowned for its beautiful day time vistas, hot summer temperatures and spectacular sunsets.

Meekatharra DHS caters for Kindergarten to Year 12 students. There is a large Aboriginal population in the town. This results in over 90% of students at Meekatharra DHS coming from Aboriginal families.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work-related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Sound oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with students, parents and teaching professionals.
  • Sound interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Sound organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective educational programs to students.
  • Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students.

ELIGIBILITY

Employees will be required to:

  • Obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment;
  • Obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check; and
  • Provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

TRAINING

Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The day-to-day responsibilities of a Graduate at Landgate are fantastic. I have had the opportunity to take full responsibility of projects, which has required me to liaise with internal and external stakeholders, organise meetings and schedule relevant deadlines. I have a learnt a lot from these opportunities and know these skills will be transferable and valuable throughout my career.

My role comprises of assisting with correcting errors in data sets and doing some ground-level geodetic work. My day-to-day responsibilities are primarily acting as a support role for the geodesists.

Pros

  • The work environment is highly flexible, I am offered a lot of opportunities and am also able to take advantage and enable myself by picking up extra tasks as though I was a permanent team member. The majority of people are very open to communicating and assisting me, and I feel like there are a lot of people who are on my side and just as involved in seeing myself succeed. The company is very open about breaking down existing silos and is interested in striving towards continuous improvement from the ground upwards. Heavily relationship based, which forces you to communicate more frequently and openly when your projects affect others.

  • Self Managed Flexi-Time

  • The positive and friendly culture is the best thing about my organisation. The people have been welcoming and happy to lend a helping hand. For us graduates, there are also a lot of training opportunities available to us and my experience has been that people within the organisation are eager to allow you get involved in as much as possible.

  • My co-workers are very nice and are always willing to help me out

  • The flexi hours are fantastic. There is no stress about going to work 'late'. You can also choose to have a long day earlier in the week to have a shorter day later in the week.

  • I believe the best thing about working at Landgate is the culture. I have felt welcomed every time and people are easily approachable. In my experience so far, I haven't had issues with anyone and it's a smaller organisation which means it's quite easy to figure out what's where and who does what.

  • I enjoy the breadth and diversity of work at Landgate. It is great to have the opportunity to collaborate with different areas and functions of the business. I am constantly learning something new about what Landgate does and enjoy meeting new people, all of whom are friendly, supportive and passionate about delivering meaningful results for the business and state.

  • I believe Landgate is relatively diverse with a large number of women in leadership roles and in terms of employing people from diverse backgrounds.

Cons

    • It's a slower pace than companies I have worked for before, and while 80% of people tend to get back to me, there is the occasional 20% who don't respond to emails. In a graduate position, there is some uncertainty towards my employment once the program ends, and the program is shorter than most, running only for a year while many others go for 2+ years.

    • The work I do is often adding value but it's difficult to pin-point exactly where it aligns with the organisations long term vision and objective.

    • It's in Midland

    • If I had to be very picky, the quality of training could be better. My colleagues are extremely busy with their work which means I may have to wait a while before receiving some help in my training.

    • I believe there isn't a focus on customers/users of our products and services. I find it very difficult to relate what I do to how it better serves the organisation's customers.

    • One downfall of working at Landgate is the career uncertainty upon completion of the 12-month graduate program. Whilst it is interesting having the opportunity to complete rotations in different areas of the business, there is not a confirmed role for graduates upon the completion of the program. This causes some uncertainty in regards to career mapping. I love the day-to-day work at Landgate, my concerns often relate to future employment prospects within the business, which align with my qualifications and career aspirations.
