As a Graduate Civil Engineer you will rotate through Track Design, Structural Design, Surveying, Construction, Asset Management, Metallurgy, Track Inspection and Major Projects teams – just to name a few. Through your rotations, you will be given responsibilities to take on real life challenges and assignments where you will develop a better understanding of our core business. As a graduate you will be involved in contributing to multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects including the 2032 Olympic Games and Cross River Rail.
Our graduate program commences in January 2023 however we’ve invested in your journey long after you’ve been offered a role - throughout your two years as a grad we will partner you with an excellent graduate mentor who will support and guide you. You’ll also participate in our soft skills program, internal networking days with guest speakers, regular site tours + coffee catch ups with executives, volunteering opportunities and access to a graduate development coordinator

Graduate Engineers with Queensland Rail commence on a salary of approximately $67,900 + Superannuation + free rail travel. This salary is reviewed annually based on performance.
Our team looks at providing a high level of reliability with regard to preventative and reactive maintenance of signalling infrastructure through the use of fault investigations, asset management and other miscellaneous activities.
My day to day responsibilities involve reviewing design documentation and provide feedback on packages submitted by contractors to ensure compliance with QR standards. I also co-ordinate meetings with subject matter experts to review such design packages. So it is a half project co-ordination and half technical engineering role. Note that this is just my current rotation, in my other rotations I have done technical design work, assisted electricians in construction and done maintenance activities with reliability engineers.
I help manage the framework and governance related to Business Improvement projects within the Corporate Services function. I help with ad hoc tasks, process mapping and work on some of these improvement projects.

Good people and supportive environment to work in. Strong job security.
The size and history of the company makes it feel quite divided at times, even between corporate and operations.
The bureaucracy, which can sometimes slow down the rapid progress of significant pieces of work (which is to be expected when working in the public sector),
Some areas have little movement and opportunity to work at a higher grade due to people being in their roles for 30+ years.
Remuneration is somewhat standard but could be better.
Nothing happens quickly here.
